What is it about the traditions of St John’s Eve that still draw the Irish people to the hearth of the bonfire every year?
The communal fire held many rites and superstitions to the ancient Irish, many of which still linger, especially in County Mayo.
Why were the cattle driven through the embers, and why would a light from the fire bring luck for the year to come? What were the uses for the herbs and yarrow gathered, the holy well visits, and why is it customary to wait for the first swim of the year until this festive day? Where did the word bonfire originate, and what were the customs behind it?
Join Really Great Tours and The Sleep Scholar in the scenic surrounds of Céide Glamping, Ballycastle, F26 YN92, on St John’s Eve, Monday 23rd June at 8:30 pm, to hear the fables, myths and folklore, and take part in some of our oldest rituals surrounding this ancient pagan celebration in honour of the sun!
